RU History

"My name is Steve and I would like to tell you a little about myself. Most people would say I had the perfect upbringing. My Christian family attended Church every Sunday and put me through Christian School. Within two years of graduation, I was addicted to cocaine and alcohol.

Addition stripped me of all my self esteem, a prosperous career and crippled me with debt. At the age of 28, I nearly died in a drunk driving accident. With a punctured lung quickly drowning me in my own blood, I cried out to God, "I don't want to die! My memory went blank from that point on. A life saving call to 911 rescued me from death. Later I would find the reasons for God's Divine intervention that night.

Three months later I stepped back into the Church where I worshipped as a child. That is when God began to change my life. The lessons learned over the next six months are detailed during our meetings. At Reformers Unanimous we teach you the different steps that lead to blessings from God. For me those blessings consist of a beautiful wife I met in Church, precious children, a debt free lifestyle and an executive position in the petroleum industry. Oh I forgot to tell you... the unknown person who saved my life by calling 911 nearly two years earlier.. Miraculously ended up to be the mother...of my future wife!"

          Steve Curington is the founder and president of Reformers Unanimous. As a drug & alcohol addict for many years, Steve saw the horror in his life caused by his addictions. After being in a near fatal accident, only one person came to see him in the hospital...his former Church Sunday School teacher. Therefore Steve returned to the church he attended as a boy, and found freedom from his addictions in Jesus Christ. He didn't try to kick the habits himself, or even apply steps to his life. He found freedom, not in rules, but in a relationship with Jesus Christ.

       He then was encouraged to write a small pamphlet about his life of addiction & how he overcame addiction in his life. All of the pamphlets were whisked out of his hand because other people knew someone they loved needed what he got. In 1995 a small group of people began to attend a Bible study group where they learned how to overcome their addictions. Later Steve went to a large Christian conference to set up a display of this addictions program & offer it to other people. To make a long story short RU is now an international ministry & is the largest faith based addiction program in the United States.

       RUI is directed by Steve Curington at its national headquarters in Rockford Illinois. There is a continuation of material & curriculum development, a residential school of discipleship, local chapter growth & assistance, and regional & national student/staff training.

       Now in each individual chapter, whether in a urban or rural setting, the leaders seek to protect people from the destructive effects of any addiction of the mind, body or spirit. The principles of RU have proven to be effective in a wide range of addictions including gambling, smoking, cocaine use, sexual addictions, and many other things. RU is not a one denominational program only, but is multifaceted in its abilities to assist the addicted to become free...finally!
